The morality of a nation
can be found in how it treats
other nations
There is a saying, carved in the scriptures and true, a commandment that says, Love thy neighbor as thy self. If we would know the righteous of a person, much judgment can come from this.
And, judgment of nations is no different. You can judge a nation by how it treats people, Yes, this includes the people of that nation, and they become "neighbors" in terms of what the scriptures are referring to.
But, it will be more obvious that other nations are our neighbors. And, those living in those other nations are our neighbors. So, what does this mean in terms of how one nation treats another? If we, as America, love our neighbor, can we translate this into international policy?
Some would say America is not the police of nations. I would wonder. If you love and care for others, there are times you step in to defend.
Some would say we should not send jobs abroad. I would wonder. If you are not selfish, you seek more than the good of your own. If you can provide jobs for your neighbors, you see it as an opportunity to love.
International trade? Trade with others if it does them good, for you seek the good of others.
Some would say we should not let the immigrant in, that there are to many criminals among them, and they will only rob our welfare system. Oh, yes, I truly wonder. The scriptures say not to judge, and I wonder at our judging all the immigrants and tossing them into one basket, and saying there are too many criminals among them that we should allow them in. These are the poor. We judge them as criminals? Judgment has never been so cruel. If the scriptures speak of judging wrongly, why does not this situation apply?
And, they will overburden our welfare system? The poor of nations will of course include those who fall on welfare rolls. The poor have always been given to asking for welfare. There is nothing new in this. We cannot afford their care? Is the richest nation on earth turning its back on the poor of the earth? Is it -- in all its pride -- suggesting it will not share its wealth with the dirty and damned of other nations? (I am not calling them dirty and damned, but feel we as a country judge them so.)
The Christianity of a nation is reflected in whether it sets aside the Bible when it comes to drafting policy. Whatever policies we draft, they will reflect the values we have.
