When a nation ceases to help its poor, it ceases to be worthy of its riches.

Do not get me wrong. I do believe we overspend on welfare. I do believe people take advantage of it. But, as the old saying goes, Don't throw the baby out with the wash. It is good to provide help for the poor.

I think of the immigrants, and of how it is said they are overburdening our welfare system. These are the poor. There are going to be among them those who belong on our welfare rolls. The poor qualify and these, the immigrants, are the poor. Next question. Should we reject them, then, saying we cannot afford them? Should we point out that these are not our own poor -- that we have not the same obligation to them as we do our own?

Then, reword what I said at the top of the post by changing just one word. When a nation ceases to help the poor, it ceases to be worthy of its riches. If you only help your own, you are selfish with your substance. There will always be the person who says, 'Me, me, me!" and we think of the child not wanting to share his toys, saying "Mine, mine, mine!"

When a child learns to share his toys, he's not so much a child.
