A prophet is more of a guide to get you to heaven than someone who tells you what's there.

There is more value to teaching us how to get there than in telling us what it will be like when we will find when we arrive. We look for miracles and prophecies and wonder if the Apostles and First Presidency are really prophets. I think of the Old Testament, and of how if you took all the prophecies and miracles and placed them on a timeline, there would be large gaps. Some of that, no doubt, would be when there literally were not prophets on earth. But, other gaps would be when there were, indeed, prophets, though no recorded miracles are known -- and maybe didn't happen. Still, they were prophets, warning the people, teaching the people, caring for the people.
Perhaps, then, as we search to know if a person is a prophet, we should look as much to whether that person is a shepherd. Are we being led, guided to eternal life? A prophet is as much someone to warn us of the pitfalls that could divide us from heaven as it is someone to tell us the heavens were opened to them and this is what they saw.
