I Remain of the Thought that We Should Defend the Kurds

We shouldn't get involved in all the infighting going on in the Middle East, goes the argument, for the Kurds are also bad guys.
We can't be the policemen of the world, goes a related argument.
I do not know all, how pure the Kurds may nor may not be. I am told some of their forces committed war atrocities against ISIS. I would that we would say, we will defend you, but you must commit to never doing such things again.
I do know the Kurds have been our allies. And, we abandoned them. That is the common talking point.
I also understand the Kurds have one of the most democratic of societies in the Middle East, if not the most democratic.
I know their civilians are being murdered.
I remain of the opinion we should defend the Kurds. I have studied some, though I should like to study more. What study I have done suggests we should defend them.
And, what of the Mike Pence brokered cease fire? Again, I have not caught enough news. From what I do understand, the cease fire is but for five days. And, during that time, the Kurds are to withdraw from within 20 miles of Turkey.
So, once the five days are over, they can go back to slaughtering the Kurds? Five days off, and for that small pause, they get the Kurds cleared from their border? Who is this Recep Tayyip Erdogan? He sounds like a shrewd negotiator to me.
Again, in all that I say above, I remain tentative, believing I should and wishing I did have more time to study this issue.
