Not Much Could I Afford

I pulled the coin out of my pocket
Anxious to pay my bill
Not much food could I afford
Not enough my stomach to fill

I laid it on the counter
And the clerk just laughed at me
"You couldn't buy a napkin
With just that much money"

So I picked up my quarter
And headed out the door
Wondering if I could ever afford to go back again
To the grocery store

I found myself on 9th Avenue
Begging for a dime
But the passers-by just waved their fists at me
As if I were a man of crime
