Shoot Him, Shoot Him Dead

The patron shot him dead. A masked robber was collecting money from customers in the restaurant, when one customer stepped in with a gun, filled the robber with several bullets, hovered over him and shot him some more just to make sure he was dead, then returned the money to the customers. Hero or villian? Which do you pick?

The incident occurred a week ago Thursday at an El Ranchito restaurant in Houston.

My pick? The patron shouldn't have killed him unless it became necessary. Stop the guy from robbing everyone, yes, but why take his life? The robber's weapon ended up being a toy gun. Of course, the "hero" probably didn't know that, but one shot in, if the robber didn't attempt to respond with gunfire of his own, the patron should have known he had stopped him.

Nine shots were heard on the video. The patron clearly killed the robber with intent.

The patron's lawyer issued a press release saying, in part: "In fear of his life and his friend’s life, my client acted to protect everyone in the restaurant. In Texas, a shooting is justified in self-defense, defense of others, and in defense of property. . . . When the investigation is complete, this case will be presented to a Grand Jury. We are confident that a Grand Jury will conclude that the shooting was justified under Texas Law."

Perhaps it will be, but it shouldn't.
