The Point is Missed on Damar Hamlin

The hit was hard enough to sent him into cardiac arrest. It goes unsaid that in the NFL, the bones and the bodies take a beating.

And the brains. Perhaps as many as 99 percent of the players suffer brain damage.   One study examined the brains of 111 players -- and 110 were found to have C.T.E. (chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by repeated blows to the head).

You just don't play this game without getting hurt -- seriously hurt.

Damar Hamlin took a hard collision to the chest as he made a tackle. No harm meant. But, in a violent world, a world of harm is inflicted by such a collision.

Here's the point that's perhaps being missed: Something needs to be done. Somewhere along the line, you need to get serous about making the game safer. Safer helmets? Body padding that covers the whole body, making it look like all the players are fat men -- so much padding that it slows the players down?

Yes, yes, yes.

Postponing the game is nice. But, that doesn't solve the problem. To solve the problem, take padding and helmets to a whole new level.
